How long you need to visit the Vatican

Best day and time of year to go
- Best months: November, January and February (avoiding Christmas and Easter) are the least crowded. Spring and summer are high season.
- Best days: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Mondays (when other Rome museums close), Fridays and weekends are busier.
- Best time: at the opening (08:00) or mid-afternoon (from 14:00). Midday is the busiest moment.
- Avoid the last Sunday of the month if you're after peace and quiet: it's free, but with long queues and reduced hours.

- Have a good breakfast beforehand: there's a cafeteria inside, but the route is long.
- Comfortable footwear: you'll walk several kilometres between galleries.
- Carry water (it's the only thing allowed in the rooms) and there are fountains to refill.
- Save energy for the Sistine Chapel: it's at the end of the route, so pace yourself to arrive with strength to spare.
