Important: the free tour does NOT go into the museum
We want to be clear so you book with the right expectations: the free tour is a walking route along the street, around the outside of the Vatican. It does not include admission to the Vatican Museums or the Sistine Chapel, which have separate paid access. If what you want is to see Michelangelo's ceiling, The Creation of Adam and The Last Judgment, you'll also need one of these options:
- Skip-the-line ticket from €55: priority access to visit on your own.
- Guided tour from €67: with an expert guide and admission included (the most recommended option).
- Early access from €98: to see the Chapel with fewer people.
Looking to get in without paying? The only way is the free entry on the last Sunday of the month (09:00–14:00), which cannot be booked and has long queues. We explain it in detail.
Why do the free tour
- Get your bearings and understand the Vatican before going into the Museums.
- Learn the history of Bernini's square and St Peter's Basilica from the outside.
- No cost up front: you pay what you think it's worth at the end.
- Perfect to combine with your museum ticket at another time of day.

No. It walks around the outside, along the street. It does not include admission to the Museums or the Chapel. To go inside you need a ticket or a guided tour.
Is it really free?
Yes, the booking is free and you pay nothing in advance. At the end you leave a voluntary tip for the guide based on what you feel it was worth.
How long does it last?
Roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, on foot around the outside. Ideal for getting your bearings before going into the museum.
