The nativity scene and tree in St Peter's Square
The most Christmassy sight at the Vatican is outdoors and free: the great illuminated tree and the monumental nativity scene set up each year in the centre of St Peter's Square. They are usually unveiled in early December (around 6-7 December) with the lighting of the tree, and stay up until mid-January, typically after Epiphany. These are estimated dates based on previous years: confirm them closer to the time, as the exact unveiling changes each season.
The nativity scene is usually a different work each year, donated by a region or country, and is accompanied by the tree —also a gift from a part of Europe. You can see them at any hour, though they are most striking at night, lit up.
The "100 Presepi" exhibition
Very close to the Vatican, beside Bernini's colonnade, the "100 Presepi" (One Hundred Nativity Scenes) exhibition is held each year: a free show bringing together nativity scenes by artists and craftspeople from around the world, in a wide range of materials and styles. It's a short, pleasant visit to round off the Christmas atmosphere before or after entering the Museums. The exact dates and location are announced each season, so it's worth confirming them closer to the time.
Midnight Mass and Urbi et Orbi
The two great religious moments of the Vatican Christmas are:
- Midnight Mass (24 December, around 22:00): the Christmas Eve mass in St Peter's Basilica. Access requires a free ticket requested in advance from the Prefecture of the Papal Household; places are limited.
- Urbi et Orbi blessing (25 December, around 12:00): the message and blessing "to the city and to the world" from the central loggia of the Basilica. It is watched from St Peter's Square, outdoors and without a booking.

Closures: 25 December and 1 January
Keep firmly in mind that the Vatican Museums close on 25 December (Christmas Day) and 1 January (New Year's Day). On the other days of the Christmas period they open with their usual hours (Monday to Saturday, 08:00 to 20:00, with last entry at 18:00). St Peter's Square and its nativity scene, being outdoors, can be visited on those two days too.
